Buck, Seifert & Jost, Inc. (BS&J) performed studies, design and inspection of construction for the original Haworth Water Treatment Plant. BS&J was engaged to perform the study, design and construction services for the plant expansion utilizing pre-ozonation and direct filtration; improvements to the existing plant in order to increase its filtering rate; design of a computer controlled system for operation of the plant including a plant operational control center; and design provisions for an audio visual room, public relations facilities and other special items required by the owner.
The original plant was designed for 52 mgd at 4 gpm/sq. ft., conventional type. The plant enlargement was designed for a peak capacity of 200 mgd at 6 gpm/sq. ft., with pre-ozone treatment and direct filtration thereby eliminating the need for a conventional coagulation process. The original coagulation facilities are being used as pass through conduits.
BS&J designed and performed construction services of the complete project, after investigation of alternative sources and estimating future demands and requirements.
The filtration plant included chemical application, settling, filtration through dual-media filters, disposal of wastewater by decanting facilities and a sludge lagoon, and an integral filtered water pumping station.
Elaborate hydraulic analysis was performed by our firm for the plant expansion which involved many unique arrangements of added construction, especially the filtered water conduits and chemical reaction chambers between the new and older sections of the treatment plant.
BS&J designed and operated (from September 1979 to January 1985) bench- scale pilot units and a 6 gpm pilot plant complete with pre and post ozone contactors, and a high rate filter and biological activated carbon filter to evaluate the treatment parameters for use in the final plant design.
The plant is producing a finished water surpassing all present day Safe Drinking Water Act requirements, for both Primary and Secondary Regulations.
All construction was completed within six months of the original project completion date.
