United Water New Rochelle - Water Main Replacement On Two Major Bridge Replacements

United Water New Rochelle (UWNR) has over 400 miles of water mains serving a heavily populated area in Westchester County, just north of New York City.  Whenever the New York State Department of Transportation or the New York State Thruway Authority decides to replace one of their bridges, UWNR must replace their respective water mains on the bridge.

BS&J has designed three such water main replacements and is in the process of designing a fourth water main replacement.  Two water main bridge replacements are currently under construction and involve two adjacent bridges, one over the Thruway and the other over the Metro North Railroad.  The water main is a sixteen inch diameter main which is suspended under the bridge over the Thruway and is in a twenty-four inch casing on the side of the bridge over the railroad.

A twelve inch diameter temporary bypass main is required to maintain service during the bridge construction.  It is constructed on an existing sidewalk on the south side of the bridge which is kept in service until the north side is replaced with all of the necessary utilities.  When the north side construction is complete, the south side will be replaced.
